Evelyn Sorohan
Artist Statement

I am an artist dedicated to reimagining our relationship with the natural world, especially in the context of climate change and various socio-economic factors. My interdisciplinary environmentally based processes allow me to leverage my professional background in art and education. My practice encompasses several key areas: conducting research and collaborative projects, creating art in my studio, and facilitating the school and community art programmes that I make which harness the intersections of climate science, experiential learning philosophies and the arts.

A symbiotic relationship has developed between these key areas of my practice, with each inspiring and enriching the other. As Leonardo Da Vinci said, "The interconnectedness of all things" serves as the foundation of my creative philosophy. I’ve realized that I cannot create in isolation; partnerships, fieldwork, professional collaborations, and community involvement are fundamental aspects of my work.

I want my work to foster creativity, critical thinking, and imagination, encouraging viewers and participants to deeply engage with urgent global eco-challenges and explore sustainable living models for a greener future. Naturally optimistic, I believe that imagination is our greatest tool in the fight to not only slow climate change but also to create a more just and equitable society. Much of my art focuses on creating the necessary conditions, space, and inspiration to facilitate and develop this imaginative growth.

Growing up in rural Cavan as a farmer’s daughter, I was immersed in the rhythms of nature. Our lives revolved around the weather, instilling in me a profound connection to the environment and a deep respect for the delicate balance of our climate.

These formative years shaped my values of experiential education, creativity, and community—principles that continue to inspire my art today.

Now married and settled in rural County Clare, I remain committed to this creative journey, blending my personal history with a contemporary exploration of environmental narratives.

I actively participate in several groups, including the Ennis Environmental Group, Inch Tidy Towns, the Creative Circle Group (Glór), St. Anne's Special School, and the Ballyalla Bravehearts swim group. I find that I receive more from these groups than I contribute, as the social and emotional learning enriches my creative work. This may explain why my interdisciplinary  practice as a whole is often described by viewers and participants using words such as "accessible," "multifaceted," "inspired by science," "critical," "relevant," "nature-based," "inspiring," "thought-provoking," "challenging," and "local."

Discover the Journey Behind the Art

Unveiling the stories, exhibitions, and collaborations that shape my creative practice and commitment to climate action.

Creative Practice

My artistic process investigates the human causes of climate change while championing the power of imagination to uncover sustainable solutions.

Through studio work and participatory community programmes co-created with professionals in science and education, I craft experiential opportunities for learning, reflection, and action.

It is a privilege to merge creative expression with collective climate or environmental action to address one of the defining challenges of our time.

Exhibitions

I have had the honor of presenting four solo exhibitions, most recently Change of Climate, an experiential showcase held at Glór Gallery in April 2024.

My work has also been featured in numerous group exhibitions, reflecting its resonance across diverse audiences.

Community Engagement and Education

In addition to my studio practice, I am actively involved in youth, community, and participatory projects.

Collaborating with organizations such as Creative Schools, Clare Arts Office’s Artist in Schools Programme, the Department of Education, and the Arts Council’s TAP and BLAST programs, I design and lead initiatives that empower participants to engage creatively with environmental issues.

I am particularly proud of my involvement in Ennis Voices for Autism’s U Create Program, where art becomes a medium for inclusion and expression.

Beyond facilitation, I contribute to educational development as a lecturer and workshop leader for the Clare and Limerick Education Centres and as part of the Arts Council Creative Schools Management team.

1.

Research & Collaboration

My creative process starts with me researching a topic that captures my interest in the environment and my imagination. I avidly read and look at imagery. I seek collaborations with scientists and educationists in that field. I dive into the data, exploring themes around climate change and sustainability.

This research helps me understand the challenges we face and inspires the direction of my art.

2.

Studio Work

Half of my time is spent in my studio physically creating work. I use various techniques and mediums to respond to what I’ve learned during my research.

My multidisciplinary approach combines painting, sculpting, and other forms of art to reflect environmental themes and spark imagination.

3.

Community Engagement

The other half of my time is spent in my socially engaged creative mode. I work with schools, community groups, and organisations to facilitate participatory environmental programmes.

Currently, I’m collaborating with 4 schools over 6–8 week periods, working with teachers and classes for 20 hours on creative, climate-focused projects. I’m also working with Ennis Men’s Shed and Ennis Tidy Towns on 8-week programmes where we co-create art that fosters community connection and inspires sustainable action.

Collaboration with Schools for Climate Education

Creative Climate Action Programme for Schools (CAPS)CAPS (Climate Action Programme for Primary Schools) is an initiative designed to empower students to engage meaningfully in climate action and environmental education using the arts as the launchpad for learning. Founded by Evelyn Sorohan, Dr. Alice D’Arcy, and the Clare Education Centre, the programme focuses on fostering awareness, creativity, and collaboration among young learners. The development of the programme was funded by The Public Innovation Fund. It was facilitated by Evelyn Sorohan at the pilot phase in six schools. It was a resounding success. Dr Alice D Arcy's team evaluated the programme. Videos of the children engaged in the CAPS experiential learning process and the evaluation can be viewed below. The programme has undergone a number of iterations.I've facilitated it to date in 20 schools in Clare and Limerck. Recently Ive adapted it for community use. With the support of Creative Clare I've had the opportunity to facilitate elements of the programme for three community groups including Ennis Tidy Towns, The Men's Shed and Ennis Environmental Action Group. If you are a teacher interested in working collaboratively with me on a creative climate action please email me a request at evelynsorohandaly@gmail.comCurrently this creative initiative is funded through streams such as the school's BLAST, TAP, Artist in Schools, LEADER and Creative Ireland funds. It is supported by Clare Arts Office and the newly formed Clare Co Co Climate Office.Key Features of the CAPS Programme:Environmental Education: Integrates hands-on learning about climate change, sustainability, and ecological responsibility into the school curriculum.Collaborative Approach: Brings together educators, students, and creative professionals to work on impactful climate action projects.Creative Learning Methods: Encourages the use of art, science, and technology to explore environmental themes in innovative ways.Experiential learning: Is at the heart of the programmeCreative Practical Actions: Guides schools and students in identifying and implementing innovative tangible climate action goals.Community Impact: Promotes sharing outcomes in the public realm, raising awareness and inspiring others to contribute to environmental sustainability.Sustainable Materials: All model creations and invention's are made by students using waste materials CAPS exemplifies the integration of education, creativity, and activism, inspiring the next generation to address climate challenges with informed and innovative solutions.

Let’s Create Impactful Change Together

Whether you’re a school, community group, or organisation, I’d love to collaborate on creative projects that inspire action and drive meaningful impact.
